The Epistle to the Hebrews
Outline Summary:

This is not a novel, and Hebrews is a very spiritual book.
Without careful study it may not profit.
Constant reading of the 13 chapters is strongly recommended
Read each chapter a few times and then study the notes.

Here is a  summary of these  study Notes;

Hebrews is a letter to Jewish Christians who because of persecution by their fellow Jews, were turning back to their Old Testament religion: Paul refers to this as “the works of the Law”

The Theme of the book is SALVATION:
Salvation by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone, and NOT by works or by keeping laws.
Who is the same: Yesterday Today and Forever. (key verse; ch 13 v.8.)
“Yesterday”- He has offered one sacrifice of Himself, once and for all.
The debt is paid in full for man’s sin. Those who believe are “saved”.
“Today” – Jesus lives and intercedes on behalf of those who believe in Him. He is continuing to save them. They are “being saved”.
“Forever” – He has an eternal kingdom, which he will share with those who keep their faith through tribulation firm unto the end. They “will be saved”

HEBREWS is about Jesus;
There are over 100 references to the Position, Power and Person of the Lord Jesus Christ;
For example in chapter 1  we have the following references;
1.    v. 2.    The Living word,  God has spoken through Him
2.     v. 2    Appointed heir of all things
3.    v. 2.    The world was made by Him
4.    v. 3.    He is the brightness of God’s glory
5.    v. 3.    He upholds all things by the word of His power.
6.    v. 3.    He purged our sins.
7.    v. 3.    He sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
                                                                also- Ch. 1:13; 8:1; 11:12; 12:2.
8.    v. 4.    Made much better than the angels.
9.    v. 4.    He obtained a more excellent name than the angels
10    v. 5.    He is the begotten Son of God.
11.    v. 6.    He is worshipped by angels.
12.    v. 8.    His throne is everlasting.
13.    v. 8.    His sceptre is a sceptre of righteousness.
14.    v. 9.    He loved righteousness
15.    v. 9.    He hated iniquity.
16.    v. 9.    God anointed him with the oil of gladness
17.    v. 13.    His enemies will become his footstool.

The Key Verse : Chapter 13 v. 8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever.
Throughout scripture, Salvation is spoken of in terms of, Past Present and Future.

Hebrews 12:2

He ever lives to make intercession for us.

PRIEST
He is our great High Priest

Now- Looking unto Jesus
FUTURE Salvation

KING
His Throne and Kingdom are forever eternal

The Finisher of our Faith
The apostle Paul tries to show his fellow Jews that all aspects of their religion,  such as  the tabernacle,  the High Priest,  and the day of Atonement,  were in reality just an earthly illustration, or parable, about their promised Messiah, Jesus Christ and His eternal Kingdom.
The first gospel  message Jesus preached to the Jews was  “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand”  (Matt 4:17)
So how do you tell the Jews that their 4000 year old religion ended in Christ Jesus?
Answer;

GRADUALLY:     note regular use of...    Therefore……Therefore…
GRACIOUSLY:      “Let us”  —   he identifies  with fellow Jews-   Exhortations.
But VERY, VERY FIRMLY:   Warnings. Some of the severest warnings against backsliding in faith.

He compares Old Testament covenant with New Testament Covenant.

•    Better Man/ Messenger .          Son of God
•    Better High Priest                     Melchisedec
•    Better Sacrifice                          Body & Blood
•    Better Tabernacle                     True Tabernacle
•    Better Promises                       Sins remembered no more
•    Better Hope                              Eternal
•    Better Covenant                       Grace
•    Better Ministry                           Conscience\Body washed
•    Better Country.                          Heaven
•    Better Resurrection                  Riches of tested faith

Paul exhorts the Jews to focus on the Eternal;

Eternal Salvation.     Ch 5:9
Eternal Judgment.     Ch 6:2
Eternal redemption.  Ch 9:12
Eternal Spirit.            Ch 9:14
Eternal Inheritance.   Ch 9: 15

And on those things which are forever;
Thy throne O God is  forever.                Ch 1:8
Priest forever like Melchisedec.           Chs 5:6. 6:20. 7:17. 7:21.
One sacrifice for sins forever.               Ch 10:12
The sanctified are  perfected forever.  Ch 10:14.
Jesus Christ is the same forever.          Ch 13:8
Glory be to Jesus Christ forever.           Ch 13:21

And everlasting;
Everlasting Covenant.         Ch 13:20

The Earthly religion is but a “shadow” or natural illustration, to teach us today of the heavenly eternal and invisible.
FAITH SEES THE INVISIBLE:
The exhortation to the Hebrews is a call to leave the earthly concepts and see the reality of the spiritual world in which God dwells.
Heb 12:18-25
18    For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
19    And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
20    (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
21    And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
22    But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
23    To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24    And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things than that of Abel.
25    See that ye refuse not him that speaks. For if they escaped not who refused him that spoke on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from heaven:

Hence the importance of the classic chapter on Faith in the Old Testament- Chap.11.
All the Old Testament’s great “works” were done by faith. It is not the works that God looks for, but the faith that produces them.
That faith was shown by their obedience to what God told them to do.
“Without faith it is impossible to please God”
Faith gives glory to God.
